Rwanda picked to establish an East African Center of excellence in health supply chain management

With a vision to improve and strengthen supply chain management for health commodities in the region, an EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers of Health sat on the 17th April 2014 and agreed to establish an EAC Regional Centre of Excellence (RCE) for Health Supply Chain Management and that it be hosted in Rwanda by the UR-CMHS-School of Public Health.

The aim of this initiative is to strengthen and professionalize health supply chain management, as well as create a hub from which innovations in health supply chain management can be disseminated in the region.

Early in the conceptualization of the project, strong collaboration between all 5 regional Ministries of Health of the EAC member states, University representatives, global partners (UNICEF, GAVI Alliance, AMP) and other stakeholders, has been identified as a core to the successful work of this centre. There is great opportunity for Rwanda to create an interface between itself and the region and internationally.

It is hoped that the RCE shall contribute to the operationalization of the global supply chain strategy developed and adopted by the GAVI Alliance and strengthen supply chain management for health commodities in general, including essential drugs and family planning products.
