NUR students injured in road accident

Engineering students from the National University of Rwanda (NUR) were involved in a road accident this Monday,25th March 2013 when the university bus they were traveling in overturned in Rugarika sector, Kamonyi District.

The bus was carrying 82 students, some of whom sustained serious injuries. The accident occurred at around 1:15pm, according to the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Hubert Gashagaza.

The cause of the accident is yet to be established, but Police said they suspect the driver was speeding. By press time, the number of the injured was not yet clear with sources giving varying figures. However, eyewitnesses estimated the number to be between 15 and 20, of which five were allegedly in critical condition.

The NUR acting Rector, Prof Manasseh Mbonye, told The New Times on phone that the injured had been taken to Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK), where they were receiving treatment.

When the accident occurred, the second-year Engineering students were heading to an iron smelting factory based in Rwamagana District for a practical study trip in line with the course under the name: “Building and Construction materials".
